I was observing my cat grooming himself and it looked like he was gnawing on his toes. What’s that about?

This is especially noticed on their back feet. They are chewing on their claws, to loosen a layer of dead cells. You may see shed claws sheaves around the house.
The can scratch their front claws to loosed the cells, but they can’t scratch their back claws, which are thicker. But they can chew on them.
